Jean started learning the piano when she was 8 years old. Her formal music education went as far as grade 8 practical and theory. She realised she was not going to be good enough to take up music professionally so instead, she took up accountancy and kept music as her hobby.

In 1969 she joined the Crawley Down Evening Women's Institute and their choir as an alto singer. In 1971, the then conductor moved from the village and that left the Choir without a leader. Jean was asked if she would take over the role of conductor. With her musical knowledge and love of singing, she was an obvious choice.

During this period, she attended several courses for conductors and accompanists gaining extra knowledge and experience.

In the years when Janet Brown was MD, Jean acted as accompanist to the Choir

Jean has been a member of other choral societies in the area and has learned a considerable amount from this valuable experience.
